The 'Clash'

The 'Clash' Image Avatar star Sam Worthington hopes to continue his hot streak with another warn-torn epic this Friday. In this razzle-dazzle 3D remake of 1981's Clash of the Titans, Worthington stars as Perseus, the earthbound son of Zeus who, with nothing left to lose, chooses to rally a band of warriors and defend the planet from an invasion of evil forces and deadly creatures from Hades' underworld. This is a war of the gods with earthlings caught in the middle as Perseus battles his own fate and seizes control of his destiny when facing what seem like insurmountable odds. Liam Neeson stars as strong-willed Kracken-releaser Zeus, and Ralph Fiennes plays the duplicitous Hades. Gemma Arterton, Alexa Devalos, and Mads Mikkelsen co-star. Rated R.

No shtick, 'Sherlock'

Sure Robert Downey Jr. might be an odd choice to the titular play supersleuth in Sherlock Holmes, but then Holmes, as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is a pretty odd chap. Director Guy Ritchie took over the iconic character last year and made Holmes fun again, and Sherlock Holmes is in stores this week on DVD and Blu-ray. By casting Downey as Holmes alongside Jude Law as trusty sidekick Dr. Watson and bringing the character back his rough-and-tumble roots, Ritchie seems to have hit on a franchise formula, and one that as rumor has it, could attract Brad Pitt to the sequels as Holmes' arch enemy Moriarty. But this time around, Holmes must not only uncover and put a stop to the dastardly plot of the dangerous Lord Blackwood, but also trade barbs with romantic rival Irene Adler, whom Doyle described in A Study in Scarlet as the only woman to best the good inspector Holmes. Rachel McAdams and Mark Strong co-star. Rated PG-13.
