'The American' way

'The American' way Image Dutch photographer-turned-filmmaker Anton Corbijn, known for everything from his evocative Joshua Tree pictures of U2 to 2007's moody Joy Division biopic Control, brings a 1970s-style European twist to the classic action sub genre, the assassin thriller, with The American, in theaters today. George Clooney stars as an aging assassin who has vowed to make his next assignment his last. But as he hides out in the Italian countryside and awaits his orders, he may grow a little too comfortable for his dangerous line of work. Clooney strikes up a friendship with a local priest and romances a passionate woman and finds himself truly intimate with two people for the first time, even as his enemies close in on him. Paulo Bonacelli and Violante Placido co-star. Rated R.

'Machete' might cut

All films start out as trailers, but Machete really began life as a trailer, a faux-grindhouse preview for a film that did not exist as part of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's twin bill schlock explosion that was Planet Terror and Death Proof. The over-the-top Tejano bloodbath that was the Machete trailer proved so popular among fans that Rodriguez is back with a feature-length film to match. Danny Trejo stars as the titular ex-federale who launches a war of revenge against his former boss. Rodriguez has roped in an impressive cast of A-list to C-list character actors, including Robert DeNiro, Cheech Marin, Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriquez, Don Johnson and Jessica Alba to bring his gritty, scene-chewing vision to kitschy, screaming life. Rated R.
