Round 2 of dining for literacy

Literacy Week was just one more event postponed due to Gustav’s wrath, but from Saturday, Nov. 29 to Dec. 7, the show will go on. In addition, several restaurants throughout the area will donate 15% of sales to benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition. Louie’s Café, Casa Maria on Bluebonnet Blvd., Counter Culture, Fresh Salads & Wraps on United Plaza Blvd. and Fish City Grill will all participate Tuesday, Dec. 2 in the Entrée to Literacy Fundraiser. Hollywood Casino Steakhouse will provide its Entrée to Literacy Fundraiser the next day from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visit gbrliteracy.org for details on participating restaurants.

Opt to adopt a turkey this Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving a family-sized frozen Butterball turkey costs about $20, which is the same price tag for saving one from the chopping block. Lovers of live turkeys can “adopt” a bird from Farm Sanctuary’s property in Watkins Glen, N.Y., for $25. In exchange donors receive a color photo of their grateful turkey, a certificate, and a subscription to the Farm Sanctuary newsletter. Kim Basinger and Casey Affleck are proud celebrity turkey adopters. Vegans and vegetarians with safe homes can even have their rescued gobbler delivered to them on the “Turkey Express” to be kept on the family farm. Visit AdoptATurkey.org for details.
