Indie folk rock darlings head to Spanish Moon
Austin indie rock band The Wooden Birds performs an early show tonight at the Spanish Moon. Opening act is Oklahoma progressive folk band Other Lives, out with their self-titled debut album. Show starts at 9 p.m. and grinds to a halt when the city’s hipster nation crawls into the music venue for Velcro, a DJ-driven dance night. Advance tickets available at ticketweb.com.
Adcock, Garner team up for Songwriters Night This round of Louisiana Songwriters Night is like the four elements of alchemy—earth, air, fire and water. Sharing the Manship Theatre stage Thursday evening will be swamp rockster CC Adcock, folk goddess Kristin Diable, rock’n’rolla Joe Stark and maverick bluesman Larry Garner. David St. Romain set to play Schlittz-a-Palooza
Schlittz & Giggles presents its first July Fourth celebration: Schlittz-a-Palooza. Back-to-back musical acts behind the pizza parlor on Florida Street downtown include bluegrass by the Fugitive Poets, tween singer Lindsay Mendez, New Orleans funk band Michael Liuzza Group, country star David St. Romain and indie rocksters the Last Chalaron. 2 p.m. to midnight. $10. Free for children under 12.
House show rocks on Independence Day
If freedom means rocking out to a live band in a cozy suburban living room, then pull up to 380 College Hill Drive as party engineer Jonathan Loubiere hosts another house party. This time the musical line-up includes We Landed on the Moon!, Glasgow and the Promise Breakers. Word about these house shows gets passed around on Facebook and Twitter, but you’ve got your official invitation at 225 Select. Music from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Prince tribute band turns up the heat after fireworks
The world lost the king of pop last week, but the Prince of Pop still exists (and so do tribute bands). Lovesexy, the Prince Tribute Band, performs at the Spanish Moon alongside the city’s most popular DJ, OttO, If you’re looking to turn it up a notch after listening to the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra during the downtown fireworks display, then the Spanish Moon is the place to be. You don’t have to be rich; you don’t have to be cool; just spend your extra time on the dance floor to guarantee a swell Fourth.
Red Star hosts Melters, Gal Holiday
Catch back-to-back shows at Red Star this weekend as the adorable fun-pop trio Melters tear up the Laurel Street concrete box Friday night. Perhaps this time you’ll catch one member smashing his bass guitar and stomping out the door in true punk-rock fashion. If having to wear safety glasses to a music show is not your thing, then head to Red Star Saturday night after the fireworks for some 1940s vintage swing as Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Review of New Orleans returns to her favorite B.R. haunt.
