Lagniappe it up at Barnes and Noble

Barnes & Noble is throwing a book bash, and everyone's invited. Head to their Citiplace location at 2 p.m. Saturday for a book signing by Pulitzer-winning author Jeffrey Marx, who will be autographing copies of his newest title, The Long Snapper: A Second Chance, A Super Bowl, A Lesson for Life. He'll be joined by former LSU player and Super Bowl champion Brian Kinchen, who will also be available for autographs and photos. Then, at 6 p.m., a bevy of local authors—Chere Coen, Karl Breaux, Danny Heitman, Petra Munro Hendry, Jay D. Edwards, Jerald Horst, Barry Keim, Robert Muller, and Mark Martin—will show up to sign copies of their works. Children's authors Sheila Hebert-Collins and Diane de las Casas (with illustrator Marita Gentry) will hold signings, storytimes, and sketching, and kids can even visit with some furry friends from the Baton Rouge Zoo. Don't miss this lively literary event. Free to the public.

Rise above the underground

Are your friends always telling you to do stand-up? Want to work on your chops and see if you've got what it takes to make it in the business?  Then head down to The Station Sports Bar & Grill next Wednesday, Aug. 26, for their new weekly Above Ground Comedy event and learn if you can really make people laugh. The mic opens at 8 p.m., but make sure to get there by 7:30 p.m. if you want to get your name in the hat for the night. $5 at the door, but those who sign up to stand up get in free. Lincoln lives in West B.R.

Lincoln lives in West B.R. Image The name of Lincoln is invoked in politics quite a lot these days, so perhaps it's appropriate that two nationally-touring exhibits about the man are visiting the West Baton Rouge Museum right now. Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, A Man for All Times takes a deeper look at the man behind the myth through Lincoln's letters, speeches, and proclamations, and runs through September 6th. Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America guides the visitor through Lincoln's life as a truly self-made man, and runs through September 11th. Several reproduction objects are on display, as well as original items from Lincoln's time. And Thursday, at the West Baton Rouge Library, you can catch a special lecture about our 16th president by historian Dr. Henry Robertson, with a free tour of the museum to follow. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Free to the public, refreshments served.
